Someone explain to me why soda in any size, since it’s a legal drink, could become (in NYC) a fine-able offense of $200 if a restaurant sells you one in a size over 16 ounces? I can buy a quart of soda in the supermarket. I can buy 16/14 ounce sodas in a single purchase anywhere… WTF are you thinking? Now I get the whole sugar packed carbonated sodas are BAD, bad, bad for you, but my point being that I KNOW THIS. If I choose to ignore it, well, me bad, bad, bad.
.
I can buy alcohol, and drink myself not only stupid but dangerously stupid AND kill my liver at the same time. All perfectly legal. There are no fines for bars selling alcohol to tipsy customers. Isn’t that a bigger problem than soda? I can smoke cigarettes until my lungs turn black and fall out. Still perfectly legal and carries no fine for my local 7-11 for selling them to me. Cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking puts a HUGE drain on our health care system but, hey what do I know?
.
Sigh, this soda thing is ridiculous and is just the kind of thing that fuels the liberal nanny state fires. Stop it. Just say no. Educate. Whatever. But STOP this nonsense. I’m from NY, I’m Liberal and I beg you stop. People don’t always do what’s right for themselves or their families… deal with it in this case. Stop trying to control what I eat.
.
Then on the heels of the soda fiasco, Cuomo/Bloomberg support decriminalizing pot in NY. One of the reasons this came about was because of the stop and frisk policies of the NYPD, where they would stop some one and order them to empty their pockets which then made anything found “in public view” and therefore an arrestable offense.
It’s way, way over due that NY and others change the laws on pot. Our jails and court systems are jammed with these non-violent offenses and the answer is not building more prisons. And I do support medical marijuana, which is a whole different thing.
.
But the thing that is bothering me is the complete disconnect both citizens and representatives have on issues today. Doesn’t anyone see these as the same issue? If you are outraged by someone in the “nanny state” telling you what to eat or not to eat… you believe in these so called individual rights… then why aren’t you in favor of decriminalization of marijuana? And why are you trying to tell me I can’t buy a 128 ounce soda in a restaurant IF I WANT TO!!! Which I assure you I don’t… but damn it makes me want to buy it, if not drink it. And don’t even get me started on those 5-hour energy drinks.
.
So, at any rate Cuomo/Bloomberg in their infinite wisdom (cough, cough) see it somehow “justifiable” that an ounce of pot should be decriminalized to a violation with a fine of $100 while a restaurant in NYC could be fined $200 for serving a willing customer a 17 ounce soda that is perfectly legal??? Excuse me but I’m having an “Oh My God” moment.
Seriously? I ask again of Mayor Bloomberg and Gov. Cuomo WTF are you thinking… um, trying to do?
It’s getting rather embarrassing at this point. Someone rein in ALL of these representatives, on all sides. Please?
G’night.
